hrmm
there's a very good chance I'll be going to E3 next month (as part of an interview/media team - not as a developer, although if I go i'll be collecting intel/trying to speak to certain people) in Los Angeles.

Now I just need a reason to go to Florida and the new england area, and I will have been to all 4 corners of the lower 48 USA.

The farthest east I've been is Detroit/Toronto
The farthest north I've been is Seattle
The farthest west i've been is Seattle
The farthest south i've been is upper Missouri

edit: because i like maps

camping gone HORRIBLY WRONG
So on Monday we went to South Dakota for a camping trip.

That night my heart started racing out of control and I asked to go to the emergency room. So we went

they managed to calm it down, and I went to camp again

but it felt like it was picking up again, so we went back to Omaha. Later that day I felt it starting to race and had trouble breathing, so I went to an emergency room in Omaha, where they held me overnight, and managed to calm my heart down again. It hasn't acted up since.

The initial verdict is the racing was brought on by too much caffeine, so I'm just going to avoid it as much as possible from now on. However due to my family history of heart problems they're starting me on studies/medicine to reduce things like my cholesterol, which is already high due to genetics.

Right now i have a mobile heart recorder on which I have to keep on until tommorow morning.

getting irritated with game engines
game maker is all crashy and the drm constantly locks me out whenever it decides to not-work.

so I think for my little project i'll just modify a certain engine to run in a higher actual resolution

some wip shots

Menu works pretty well

Not quite working yet..

In an attempt to get a bit more healthy
last weekend before this, I bought my last 12 pack of Vanilla Coke and Vault. and two 12 packs of Coca Cola Zero and Zero Vanilla.

Next time, it's just going to be the Zero variations. Drinking pop otherwise is too much of a calorie debt for so little gain. I'm going to try and limit myself to a max of 64oz of any non-Zero pop per week.

I used to like Pepsi One before they switched it to Splenda. The taste is just.. weird now, and Splenda always makes my throat feel weird.

I actually think they did a pretty good job with Coca Cola Zero. It really does taste just like the normal stuff.. and slightly better, honestly. A lot less "chemical" taste. Everyone I know that drank Diet pops switched to it as soon as they tried it.

It's kind of like that Doritos X13-D. I remember everyone that tried it, took a bite, and went "What. How did they do that. That's awesome." (the chips tasted like biting into a cheeseburger)

after a 3 day crushing programming marathon, someone needed a new pic of me to draw a staff picture for our new gaming/etc site.

I think if my hair balds any more I'm just going to shave it completely.

Newest statistics for Sword of Jade, 3rd year postmortem factoids
Combined download count from rpgcreations.com (before it was stolen), castleparadox.com, etc.

75,000+ downloads.

434 clicked the "Buy the Sword of Jade CD!" link in the manual.

7,549 clicked the "Update" button in the launcher (which won't work anymore)

A vast majority of the downloads were in late August/early September 2005 just after release. it went down a bit but stayed relatively stable since then, going at a rate of about 500 downloads a month after the big download rushes.

Sword of Jade was also featured on the cover of a game magazine in the Czech area of Europe.

It's been 2 years and 7 months since the game came out. Thanks to the work of our playtesters, there has not been a need for a patch. Ever. So, thanks playtesters.

Sword of Jade released on the OHRRPGCE engine version Quanternion. since then, the engine has released Serendipity, Serendipity+, Tirgoviste, Ubersetzung (Uberzetsung?), and Voxhumana. It's usually used as a "did we break something?" test for the developers, which is cool.

The initial release of Jade has 99 tracks, 98 of which produce actual music (one is a special silence track). We also used up all 100 available maps at the time.

It takes 15-20 minutes to compile Sword of Jade's scripts. I actually haven't tried to do that on this Vista computer, but it'll probably be near the same. The usual compile time for an OHRRPGCE game script file is 1-10 seconds.

Jade has something like 80,000 or 90,000 lines of code, I forgot the number. only about 2% of them are commented. I'm also sure this is more lines than GAME.EXE has itself.

Jade's entire plot was described by me to Charbile via an epically long ICQ conversation. The log was used as the initial design document, remnants of it still remain in the design doc. Perhaps if it's okay with Charbile, maybe we'll release the design doc, or at least parts of it. (Unless we already did? I don't think we did). The final game follows the initial conversation about 90%, with two key changes that I remember : Katina used to be in Mi'la's spot in the story, and... well, I can't ruin that one, because I might save it for later.

Pre-design doc, Jade was originally going to have 10 playable heroes, versus the final base 4.

Johan and Pyrus used to be named John and Paul. I forget if that was supposed to be a biblical reference or not.

An early version of the game, if you loaded .sav files from other popular OHR games, would unlock secret dungeons. This was somewhere in early 2000. I dropped it because I realized it was silly, and it was also a pain in the ass to set up.

Jade used to have shoot-em-up sections with Johan but I had to drop it since plotscripting wasn't fast enough. I'm glad that happened now though, those would have been weird in the final game.

The couple you can play as in the game used to be named after and based off two people I knew from Insight Games, Julian and his then girlfriend Heidi. Then Julian turned out to be an utter asshole and broke up with her, and to avoid the awkwardness the characters were renamed. The person they go after is still based of He Who Shall Not Be Named.

Chenzi and HuckdonFonix tricked me into downloading a Sub7 backdoor and attempted to delete everything I had for Sword of Jade sometime in late 2000. I think. Either way, they failed. And both are hardly remembered today..

during development I picked up a tip from the PK FORTIS BOARDHOST BOARD that you could block NPCs from walking into doors or corral them to specific places in the map by placing down NPCs. One of the IRC OPs, Grimtooth, claimed that he had come up with this idea first and that he was going to ban me until I took it out. (He also claimed that he made the original Zelda fan game and every other Zelda fan game was copying him. He's also batshit crazy.)

At one point Jade almost got ported and moved over to RPGMaker2000.

At one point Jade almost got ported over to Ironhoof's engine RPGDTE.

At one point I did have a mostly working port of Jade in Moogle1's Zelda engine RPG-ACE. That was a neat engine. I think it was called RPG-ACE...

The last engine Jade was considered porting to was NeoTA's Lucidity.

While I made up and did the core plot, Charbile wrote the dialogue and textboxes. All 8,000+ of them. This is because I can't write dialogue to save my life. And also because Charbile is awesome at that.

Charbile was the one that changed Mi'la to having one eye.

The music guy before we went with Jazz Man's music tried to charge me over 50,000$ for 21 tracks of music that weren't even close to being 9-channel BAM compatible. I don't mention his name because he's a dick.

i just got rock band
(don't worry, i'm still working out, I just keep forgetting to update here)

So I just got Rock Band. it's a pretty fun game. Bought two songs on Live Marketplace: Gimee Three Steps and Move Along.

Guitar is as you expect if you've played GH2. Harmonix's note charts actually make sense.

Singing is interesting. I 99% Don't Fear the Reaper on my first try. Some other songs, like Reptilia, I have no idea what pitch they want.

Drums are the new one to music games. It actually works pretty well, and if you attempt it on Expert you are GOING TO DIE. Unless you actually play drums, then it'll be easy for you.

I intentionally did not do any workouts today besides my normal activity in order to let my muscles rest. (They were still a bit sore from jumping up to 10 minutes on the bike the other day). I will be back to working out tommorow.

At least it's an update
So, last year (I think it was?) I tried to do an excercising journal, but it was hard to keep up with because I had to go walk around the block, and a lot of times, even though I'm a big guy, it wouldn't have been a wise decision to do that.

However, I asked for (and got) a recumbent exercise bike for Xmas, so I'm going to attempt to journal my excercise, since I can do it no matter the weather or what creepy people are sitting outside. Also, it'd probably be a good idea to actually use this LJ.

Since I had trouble getting to LJ before, I'll just post this catch up journal entry now:

Videogames:
Demo'd the last revision of Flyguy to my brother, he enjoyed the editor

Xbox Live is still down.

Starting weight: guessing around 250-255, don't have a scale I can get on

Jan 1:
Cycled for 5 minutes. 67 calories burned, 1.1 miles covered (going off the bike's readings)
maintained speed around 12mph

Jan 2:
Cyled for 5 minutes, 70 calories burned, 1.3 miles covered
maintained speed around 16mph

Jan 3:
forgot to cycle!

Jan 4:
planning to cycle for 5 minutes.

goal: start going for 10 minutes at a time by Jan 18th.

notes so far: my knees already feel a lot better, and are a lot more flexible.

Call of Duty 4
I'm playing through this. Don't like multiplayer that much yet. But the campaign is pretty well done.

There is a certain moment that I just passed that was especially hard-hitting, and scary. Not like, shock scary, just.. scary scary. The way the moment happens.. you don't realize what has happened until a few seconds after it does, which is an achievement in a videogame to me since your attention is usually focused by the game. I think this lent to it's scariness.

And what you do/experience right after just compounded it. It was like I was playing a nightmare.
